Innovations in teaching and learning through contextualized approaches to increase the quality, relevance and sustainability of education in Nepal.
On August 6, 2017, two of the PhD fellows Shree Krishna Wagle and Parbati Dhungana, together with project coordinator Dr. Bal Chandra Luitel made one day field visit to Dhapcha, Kavre. The visit had twofold purposes; first, to gain familiarity on local contexts and educational dynamics of rural Kavre, and second, to select any three schools, which would possibly meet the requirements of NORHED project for participatory action research intervention.
Starting from Shree Janak Seccondery School, Methenko, Kavre, the team visited five different government schools at rural settings. In doing so, short meetings were made with school head teachers and teachers, particularly the primary school teachers from each school. Field information on the available area of land, class specific number of students, number of teachers, and available facilities were adequately noted.
Comparatively, Shree Janahit Higher Secondry School, Dhapcha-9, Kavre could be a leading school for project intervention. Located to the road side, the school is between Shree Saraswati Primary School, Dhapcha 3, Kavre to the right and Shree Dhapcha Secondary School, Dhapcha 14, Kavre to the left. Both Saraswati Primary schools and Shree Dhapcha Secondary School could be selected as other supporting schools for the intervention.
Nevertheless, as the team was in the very initial phase of participatory action research, other decisions could be made only after detail need assessment focused to contextualized curriculum practices in these three initially selected schools. The details of field notes are presented in the table below:
